Explore Nikko: Taiyuin-byo

The Taiyuin-byo is the funerary monument of the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, the grandson of Ieyasu. The Taiyuin-byo looks like the Toshogu in its sketch and copious decoration, but it's least lavish than the Toshogu. Like the Toshogu, the Taiyuin-byo combines many concepts of Shinto and Buddhist elements. Taiyuin-byo belongs to Rinnoji Temple.

When you visit Iemitsu's mausoleum, it is advisable to buy a combination ticket, which also offers admission to the Toshogu, the Rinnoji's Sanbutsudo and Futarasan Shrine.

Taiyuin-byo is located 200 meters west of Toshogu, a 30 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride (300 Yen one way, 500 Yen day pass, covered by the Tobu free passes) from Tobu and JR Nikko Stations.
