Sports in Japan: Soccer

The J-League is the professional soccer league of Japan, which debuted in 1993. Since 1999, it has been consisting of two divisions, J1 and J2.

Amateur soccer leagues had existed in Japan long before 1993, but the J-League caused soccer to gain much popularity. Today, soccer is competing with baseball as the nation's most popular sport.

In France 1998, the Japan national soccer team participated in a world cup for the first time, arousing foreign soccer clubs' attention in players like Nakata Hidetoshi for overseas recruitment. The World Cup 2002 was co-hosted by Japan and Korea.
