Chagayu (or rice porridge) has long been the most frequent food for the people of Nara. It changed from the poor people's breakfast into a fairly costly refinement, well, this recipe is not complicated it consists basically in a thin rice gruel, boiled up with soya beans, sweet potatoes and green tea foliage. It's more convenient as part of the teishoku, when another ingredients will give more taste. The recipes of Tororo is very similar: it's thickened grated yam mixed with soy sauce, seaweed and barley, then poured over a bowl of rice - whole of protein and rather sticky.
