Explore Takamatsu: Takamatsu Castle

Takamatsu Castle, also called Tamamo Castle was constructed in 1590 near to the sea, a peculiarity between the Japanese castles. The Ikoma Clan took the control from the castle during 54 years, before the fief was transferred to the Matsudaira Clan, relatives of the Tokugawa Clan, who resided there for the rest of the Edo Period.

Of the five celebrated towers of the castle only the basis is remaining today, with a altar built on top. Other remains are moats filled by sea water, several gates, a residential building dating from the Meiji Period and two turrets, adding in the Tsukimi Yagura, a turret for moon viewing.

Takamatsu Castle is located only some steps from JR Takamatsu Station, near to the Kotoden terminal station.
